I was raised in a Congolese catholic family. I was never really into it, but I just went along because I didn't think I had a choice. However, in my early teens I started learning about how the institution of the catholic church used to control people throughout history. At one point, it was literally the government. As an adult, I learned about the Negro/Slave Bible. It was created after the Haitian revolution. The removed sections of the original scripture and perverted the structure so that when the enslaved Africans would read it, their will to gain freedom would be suppressed, and their resolve would be non-existent. My thesis is that that book is still effecting us to this day.
