“Babysitting Crickets” lives in the aftermath of another no-show. The narrator tries to make peace with the quiet while the crickets become an accidental backing band—steady, patient, and more dependable than the person he misses. Beneath its humor is the ache of realizing that absence can become a habit, and that eventually even the most familiar empty space may not be waiting anymore.
