But nothing shows off the Brooklyn rapper’s effortless charisma better than last year’s breakout track, “Telfy.” Built around an immediately familiar sample of Sisqó’s “Thong Song,” the single presents Maiya The Don as a force to be reckoned with, as she raps on the hook: “I’m in my bag, I’m in my Telfy.”

YTB Fatt

Hometown: West Memphis, Arkansas

After signing to Moneybagg Yo’s Bread Gang label at the top of the year, YTB Fatt has been making his mark. Coming from West Memphis, a city located directly across the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tennessee, Fatt takes on the cool yet aggressive flow that characterizes the region, sounding adept over a variety of beats. On his latest, “Shot Off Gumbo,” he teams up with his label boss Moneybagg Yo over a thundering, minimalist production, celebrating his rise next to his mentor.

SCY Jimm

Hometown: Bunnell, FL

SCY Jimm has been making waves in Florida independently over the last few years. Hailing from the small town of Bunnell, midway between Jacksonville and Orlando, he recently signed on to the powerhouse Quality Control roster and his first single for the label doesn’t disappoint. “Took a Risk” is built around a soulful sample and fast-paced percussion, allowing Jimm to show off his dynamic flow. “They asking how I got it, I went and took a risk,” he raps, coasting over the instrumental.

Spliffjit

Hometown: Tallahassee, FL

Though he’s still a rising name in Florida’s crowded pool of rap talent, Spliffjit immediately stands out for his eclectic beat selection. Across his Street Politician tape, released at the end of 2022, he stretches his flow and melodic tendencies over hard-hitting instrumentals and slow-rolling sample beats alike. On “Kept It Real,” a standout from the project, he raps over a tightly-coiled horn sample, rapping about time in jail and his fast-paced life. “Boy you ain’t got nothing to say, what the f*** you rapping for?/ You ain’t even made nothing today, what the f*** you trapping for?” he asks urgently in the middle of his verse.

Rundown Spaz

Hometown: Pine Bluff, Arkansas

Rundown Spaz is an up-and-coming rapper from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, a state that’s been making more and more of an impact as of late. On “Run It,” his standout track in his short career so far, is simple yet impactful. Over a catchy acoustic guitar loop, Spaz delivers threats, boasts, and punchlines for two minutes straight. “You think that Smiff N Wesson loyal? Treat my Glock like that b**** royal,” he rhymes.

Woodboy Gee

Hometown: St. Petersburg, FL

Over the last year, Florida rapper Woodboy Gee has collaborated with many of the most exciting rising names in rap, including Peezy, Rob49, and Babyface Ray, holding his own next to each. “Brick On Me,” his first solo single of 2023, finds the St. Petersburg native keeping up the momentum. On the song’s rolling percussion, Woodboy Gee sounds forceful, rapping about his hustling credentials confidently.

YhapoJJ

Hometown: Huntsville, AL

For those familiar with rap’s online underground, the name YhapoJJ will probably ring a bell. The prolific Alabama rapper has collaborated with the likes of Izaya Tiji, rodneyy and others, and he has a penchant for picking forward-thinking production. “Neva,” his latest single, is no exception; over an ethereal synths and distorted drums, he raps with a lilting melody that devolves into hypnotic chanting.

NextYoungin

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA

Though NextYoungin is probably best known for featuring alongside ppcocaine on “3 Musketeers,” the rapper has plenty to offer as a solo act. “That Yeah,” her latest single, is a testament to her abilities. Over a fast-paced instrumental, she boasts about how nobody else is stacking up next to her in a shrill tone. “Main course, b****, all you hoes giving side dish,” she raps on the first verse.

Baby Jungle

Hometown: Macon, GA

While Macon, Georgia rapper Baby Jungle began his career with menacing anthems like “The Purge,” his latest offering is a much more laid-back affair. Alongside fast-rising Florida rapper Luh Tyler, Baby Jungle shows off his dynamic flow on a more relaxed instrumental, trading verses about getting money and dealing with their enemies. Next to the high-pitched Tyler, Baby Jungle’s raspy voice is a perfect complement.

Seiji Oda

Hometown: Oakland, CA

Rapper and producer Seiji Oda first made a name for himself alongside his brother Lil Ricefield with “Trapanese,” a song that made fun of Asian stereotypes and was filled with anime references. Since then, the Oakland artist has shown the depth of his talents, showcasing his production skills, catchy writing, and lighthearted approach. On recent single “All I Need,” he raps over a typically bouncy self-produced beat, rapping about his taste in women and turning the simple beat into a certified slap.
