A sitting Nigerian governor, Chris Ngige, was physically abducted at gunpoint by police acting on the orders of his own political godfather, Chris Uba, in a brazen attempt to forge his resignation and seize control of Anambra State in July 2003. The plan failed, but the fallout plunged the state into years of political violence, burning of government buildings, and court battles, ending only in 2006 when the courts handed the governorship to Peter Obi, who had actually won the original election three years earlier.
