Miriam Makeba, often called “Mama Africa,” was a legendary South African singer and anti-apartheid activist. Born in 1932, she used her music to celebrate African identity while speaking out against racial injustice. Her global hits like “Pata Pata” brought African sounds to international audiences. Forced into exile for over 30 years due to her activism, she became a powerful voice for freedom and human rights. Makeba also addressed the United Nations about apartheid. She returned to South Africa in 1990 after Nelson Mandela’s release and remained an icon until her death in 2008.
