The term “facing” refers to smoking alone, and the EP certainly doesn’t shy away from its namesake. Lead single “Lemon-Aid” is a triumphant ode to an especially potent strain, and “Hot Box”’s driving acoustic guitar riffs recreate the haze of a smoke-filled passenger seat. But FACING isn’t just music for smokers. Produced by Detroit-based producers STACKS//CULTURE and PARADISE, the EP is colored with an eclectic sonic palette drawn from trap, funk, jazz, bossa nova, and New Jack Swing. Lyricists will find depths to mine in Prime’s hard-hitting “Miss Frizzle” verse, producers have a study in craft in “Lemon-Aid”’s melange of analog and live instrumentation, and the intricate guitar and bass work on “Bossa Sweets” make this EP well-worth a listen for instrumentalists.
