George Bennard wrote the hymn "The Old Rugged Cross" in 1912 after a period of intense personal reflection while leading revival meetings in Albion, Michigan. Inspired by a desire to better understand the power of the cross, he envisioned the Savior bearing it to Calvary, leading him to pen the lyrics that have since become a beloved Christian anthem.
