This special report was broadcast on the Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV) on 16 March 2008. It captures socioeconomic life on the oil and fish-rich Bakassi peninsular after decades of tensions between Cameroon and Nigeria over the area. The tensions had gained steam in the early 1980s. Cameroon took the matter to the ICJ in 1994. The court ruled in Cameroon’s favor in October 2002. A June 2006 Greentree Accord was brokered by then UN Secretary-General – Kofi Annan. Presidents Paul Biya (Cameroon) and Olusegun Obasanjo (Nigeria) signed it. This paved the way for peace. Nigeria started a programmed withdrawal of its administration and forces from the region from August 2006. Final handover to Cameroon occurred on 14 August 2008. Months before that, I went there to see how the place fared.
