2oo7 (DivineDevine & Shai Nowell) — “BreakUp 2 Makeup”

Sometimes things just fall into place. This was the case for Shai Nowell and DivineDevine: two Atlanta artists who recently joined forces as 2oo7. They had both released solo music for years–Nowell dabbling in an eclectic mix of dream-pop and neo-soul; Devine singing and rapping over EDM and trap beats. Then, in 2021, they began collaborating.

“One day,” Nowell tells Audiomack, “Me and Devine were talking and she said she liked one of the songs off my last EP, and I told her I’d always liked her music. So we just decided to start working.” Before long, they had a handful of demos that eventually became their first project, Riot Of The Kelly Green Love. The tape is a tender seven-track glimpse at one of Atlanta’s most promising new R&B groups. No track makes a better case for this than “BreakUp 2 Makeup.”

Over a dreamscape of airy guitar riffs laid by Nowell, Devine laments her pattern of indecision with a voice of velvet: “We breakup before the first date / I think this is a big mistake / But I can’t help it, you make me smile / Oh baby please just stay a while.” As Devine paints the song with amber hues of emotion, Nowell’s sensual production serves as the perfect canvas. This is an image of fleeting beauty, like watching the end of a sunset as the rays peek through a city skyline.
