Nick Mono — “All That You Do”

Multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Nick Mono makes soul-baring pop music. His writing often focuses on the grey area of human relationships. The London artist broke with “Effy Stonem,” and this year’s “Rusty” gives off the impression Mono isn’t being crushed under the pressure of becoming an indie darling. There’s a cascading, gravelly tone to Nick Mono’s singing—equal parts textured and smooth, a feast for the ears.

“All That You Do,” Mono’s latest single,” features one of his favorite-ever verses. Inspired by D’Angelo and produced by Mono himself, “All That You Do” unfolds slowly but the writing is urgent. “Spending a year on somebody…” he drones. The self-described hopelessness of the song builds up to be suffocating. The great struggle of loving someone while living your own life contorts and melts away beneath a soaring guitar motif.
