Montell Fish — “Hotel”

This summer, Montell Fish took his velvety croons and gospel influences, and released his debut album JAMIE. The tender record showed off the Pittsburgh native’s DIY sensibilities and helped land him his first televised performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with “Darling.” A byproduct of depression, and wrestling with his identity and faith, JAMIE pushes the boundaries of what faith-based music can sound like: “I didn’t want to make gospel or contemporary Christian music,” Fish told Billboard. “So I began experimenting.”

Now several months removed from the fleeting angst that made up his debut, Montell Fish returns with the brooding and bass-heavy “Hotel.” The single is a fierce breakup song, sounding like tumbling back into darkness. Closed out by a rock-inflected guitar riff, “Hotel” reveals a side of Montell Fish that is even more capable of plumbing through his own sadness.
