Jaas — “UGLY”

Chicago-based artist Jaas is a profound storyteller. The singer-songwriter broke into the music industry in 2017 with “Take A Look,” a sultry medley inspired by the sounds of early 2000s R&B. Since then, Jaas has been steadily cultivating her brand of soul-bearing mood music, which she refines on her debut EP, Unavailable, released October 18.

“UGLY,” an Unavailable standout, explores the inevitable moment when romantic infatuation contorts into passive aggression, awkward silences, and barren disagreements. Jaas’ sinuous vocal coils around the lo-fi production of fellow Chicagoan Rozart. We get maximal room for the artist to assure an ex-lover they’re worse off without her.

“Long story short, I could have did things just as dirty but instead I killed him with my absence,” Jaas tells Audiomack World about “UGLY.” “I think it hurts more when they know you was a real one.”
