Tyler, The Creator — “LUMBERJACK”

Tyler season is upon us once more. The GRAMMY-winner’s career arc is one of hip-hop’s most inspiring growth stories. While Flower Boy’s coming out was one of the most bare moments in Tyler, The Creator’s oeuvre, it was the funky IGOR in 2019 that showcased his gentler side, winning over the last of critics from his shock-rap days.

Produced by Tyler himself, “LUMBERJACK” is a rowdy return to the more aggressive stylings upon which he built his early fame. A DJ Drama drop leads us into a maelstrom of bars from one of rap’s best technicians. His gravelly voice is somehow fearsome and inviting—how wonderful to hear from one of the artists soundtracking our sonic generation. “LUMBERJACK” sounds like towering over haters on iron stilts, only to parachute down to earth with a seismic slam.
