3 Artists Share Their Best Music Industry Advice

The music industry can be a dangerous game. Without a strong head on your shoulders, a dedicated inner circle, and a lot of blind faith, it’s difficult to make it beyond a handful of streams in a crowded market.

Remember to enjoy the ride. The best advice that I’ve gotten in my career so far has definitely been to enjoy. The thing I love the most has had to bring joy to me. I love making music and in order to do it and want to consistently do it I have to enjoy every moment of it. It’s important to me that I also take in the highs and lows of this journey because every part of it takes part in the artist I grow into each and every day. —Kadeem Tyrell

Everything big starts small. Don’t be afraid to start small. As a creative with big dreams and ambitions it's easy to be so intimidated by the scale of the vision that you do nothing at all. Everything big starts small. —ADO

No shortcuts. Don't cut corners. I think one of the hardest things about being independent is the financial aspect of things. It’s easy to lose sight of the end goal when times get tough. I’ve learnt that it’s just as important to invest in yourself as it is making money in the first place. —Jaz Karis

Know the business. The mistake I learnt from the most is not being knowledgeable about the business and finance side of the music industry and my own music. That taught me to start getting clued up with the ins and outs of how it goes, contracts, and more. —Kadeem Tyrell

Take care of your mental health. My mental health is important to me. I’ve always believed it’s a good idea to have something to turn to when I feel mentally I need a break from something, so I take time to go to the gym, cook, write. Working is also a way that I take a break, funnily enough, and another way I release energy. — Kadeem Tyrell
