What You Need to Know About The Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) & Getting Paid

By Audiomack on

The U.S. music industry is going through an evolution for how it licenses digital music and ensures that copyright owners (including songwriters, composers, lyricists and publishers) receive the share of royalties they are owed.

On January 1, 2021, a new entity, The Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC), began administering blanket mechanical licenses for digital music and collecting and paying out royalties for songwriters and publishers. The MLC is also responsible for paying out accrued unpaid royalties for unmatched musical works by identifying the copyright owners of the unmatched musical works and their shares of such works.

In order for songwriters and publishers to be appropriately paid, the MLC must know which works belong to which songwriters and publishers and the applicable ownership splits. The MLC provides ways for copyright owners to claim their musical works and their ownership shares in those works, and to in turn receive any accrued unpaid royalties as well as royalty payments going forward. We strongly encourage all creators and publishers to visit to learn more about The MLC and see what it can do for you.

Audiomack is a digital music provider whose services are licensed under the blanket mechanical license administered by the MLC.
