Keeping things a lighter while preserving his skill on the mic, Saba drops off a freestyle over Drake’s hit single, “Nice For What.”
Chicago wordsmith Saba stunned all of hip-hop with his soulful, jazzy, and vulnerable new album, Care For Me. Where his last record, Bucket List Project and his seminal Comfort Zone mixtape were both focused on bright moments and optimism, Care For Me revealed Saba to be a man haunted by his heartache. Featuring some of his tightest and most wrenching raps to date, the album established Saba as an artist with range and depth of emotion. Now, keeping things a little lighter while preserving his skill on the mic, Saba drops off a freestyle over Drake’s hit single, “Nice For What.”
The freestyle is breezy and lighthearted. Even the description, which partly reads: “WOW THIS SABA GUY IS PRETTY GOOD,” has a nice dose of cheek to offset the gravity of Saba’s last effort. We hear Saba dipping into those booming inflections that made his earlier work so charming and infectious. When he raps in his pocket, every bar sounds as if it’s being delivered with a smile, making Saba one of Chicago’s most personable artists.
