DJ Critical Hype fuses Kendrick Lamar’s vocals with Dr. Dre’s iconic production.
Now here’s something we all needed: a Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre collaboration. Of course, since this project was taking too long to materialize in real time, DJ Critical Hype spent over a year blending the two legendary artists’ sounds into one cohesive body of work. Two years ago, DJ Critical Hype did the same for Chance The Rapper and Kanye West on his, Chance The Dropout blend tape, but The DAMN. Chronic taps into a whole new level of immersion, seamlessness, and quality.
As a rap fan, it’s incredibly gratifying to hear Kendrick spit over a grip of iconic and obscure Dre beats, but as DJ Critical Hype revealed to Pigeons and Planes, the process was far from easy. “A lot of the tempos actually didn’t mix well,” he says. “It was a lot more work trying to find good mixes. I had to dig deep and make a capellas for about 60 to 70 Kendrick songs and try and find stuff I was happy with.”
