Producer, singer, and Gothboiclique architect fish narc pulls from the ether of DIY-alternative scenes from his native Seattle and the gutter of hip-hop’s brooding underground to create a mosh pit-ready sound. Whether it’s letting his voice be heard, as on 2020’s WiLDFiRE, or helping to build out the bones of Lil Peep’s sound as on the beloved 2017 GOTH ANGEL SINNER EP, fish narc’s strength is his ability to telegraph unhinged emotion in coherent song. From his early days in the Thraxxhouse collective to his present day Foraging Wild Mushrooms mixtape, the artist born Ben Funkhouser has been a torchbearer for the tortured experimentalist.
fish narc taps fellow Gothboi Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, previously of Tigers Jaw, and Black Kray for “Forgive Me,” a Foraging standout. Wicca Phase’s urging vocals shapeshift over fish narc’s layered spiral of guitars. Black Kray lends a crumbly and downtrodden verse, enjoyable and vivid fare from the Goth Money Records founder. fish’s production parts the sea of feeling to give listeners a way through otherwise overpowering waves of sadness.
