City Girls — “Twerkulator”

Prepare your bodies: it’s time for the “Twerkulator.” The new single from Florida rap duo City Girls—comprised of the fiery JT and Yung Miami—finally sees an official release after racking up millions of views and seemingly endless hype by way of a leaked snippet on social media. Produced by Mr. Hanky, the duo each deliver sterling verses overtop the pulsing sample of “Planet Rock,” the landmark 1982 single by Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force. Even in the face of leaks and clearance issues, City Girls make moments.

Since their 2017 debut track, which went on to be included on the Quality Control Control The Streets Volume 1 compilation, the City Girls have enjoyed a steady—if not turbulent—rise. In 2018, they won listeners over with an uncredited Drake feature on “In My Feelings,” which compounded the impact of their celebrated debut mixtape, Period. Two studio albums released in the last three years also secured them fans and collaborators in Cardi B, Lil Wayne, and more.
