Alkaline — “Hostage”

Kingston’s Alkaline has been blending dancehall, reggae, hip-hop, and controversy since his 2011 debut. In the 10 years since, the Jamaican artist has amassed a massive following and cemented his legendary status, all leading up to his sophomore album, Top Prize. Coming five years after his debut, the album is packed with uncompromising riddims all supported by Alkaline’s unwavering vocal intonations.

On an album balancing the sensual with success anthems, “Hostage” is a clear standout. Produced by Jahvy Ambassador, Alkaline’s inimitable voice floats atop bright percussion as he hits boundless high notes. A flurry of inflections help make “Hostage” feel complete—a necessary entry in the Alkaline canon.

“Fi all the girls across the world wid captivating effects weh mek yuh affi say #hostage,” Alkaline told Audiomack regarding the track.
