The son of first generation Colombian immigrants, Al Basics (Allan Holguin) was born in the Hip-Hop enshrined borough of Queens. Al studied at The University of Arizona, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Writing.
Al Basics’s style has been described as poetry pouring like whiskey over the ice of Hip-Hop. His time spent both in New York City, and the Sonoran Desert, in both the streets and the university, gives a paradoxical edge to his work. His music is both rugged and intellectual, with visions of poetry, mythology, and the gritty, claustrophobic beauty and electricity of Queens flowing across a somber, Boom-Bap soundscape with metaphors as bright as the starlight above Tucson. Interwoven in his albums are tracks that hearken back to classic New York Hip-Hop.
